“Hi, my name’s Laurence, I’m the new videographer.” I’ve used those words a lot since I joined MEC in March. Since then, I’ve met great people, learned a ton about the company, and have been made to feel right at home.
Last week rose to the top of my personal charts when a shipment of video production equipment arrived in a box with my name stamped all over it! I’d barely cracked it open when Creative Manager, Dianne asked if I’d like to test it out at an MEC yoga wear photo shoot the next day. No need to ask twice.
The next morning I realized I had no camera case, so I crammed a bunch of video gear in an MEC cooler (surprisingly good for the job) and set off in search of a studio called Hackspace on East Hastings in Vancouver. Directions included the somewhat cryptic: “enter via alley.” A brief search of the graffiti decorated brickwork revealed a tiny Hackspace decal on a large iron door. Dianne greeted me and lead me up to a yoga studio like no other. Our backdrop oozed gritty urban charm, and the shoot was already in full flow.
I unpacked my cooler and started ducking and diving between set-ups, capturing footage and trying to keep out of the way of the photographers and everyone’s impossibly bendy limbs. Check out the result after I hit the edit suite to put together this reel that captures the day.
Yes, that is a nice shoot. Been doing yoga for about 6 years now, you captured a good piece of it- thanks
I am a 70 year old backpacker. Hip doc says it time to start Yoga.
Thanks,
Why oh why is MEC selling yoga gear? What part of MOUNTAIN equipment coop has anything to do with sitting indoors in a studio and stretching??
… Let me take a wild guess – money, $$$, profit – MEC is selling out to please the masses the cash in on the lululemon market. I guess selling trad gear and winter mountaineering equipment really doesn’t bring in much cash…
Hi Max, Thanks for your feedback. We love hearing from our followers. To answer your question, most climbers don’t just climb: they train to climb through a fitness regime that may include running and/or yoga. Our goal is to be responsive to our members’ evolving needs.
At MEC, our challenge is to ensure we respond to our members’ changing needs, while staying true to our backcountry roots. Our Board of Directors recently approved a change to MEC’s Charter in recognition of the continued evolution of outdoor recreation in Canada. Despite the change, rest assured, our commitment to traditional self-propelled activities is as strong as ever: http://tinyurl.com/MEC-Charter.
We haven’t stopped selling outdoor gear. We remain committed to strengthening our traditional outdoor activities along with the new. In fact, we have undergone substantial redevelopments to our packs, tents, and sleeping bags to make them even more functional for the end user. We continue to improve the value, function, and fit of MEC-brand clothing, including improved fit and styling for women.
And there is nothing wrong with yoga, don’t get me wrong. I even partake in it myself fairly regularly. But yoga has nothing to do with a wilderness gear coop – MEC was founded with a very specific vision, which I feel is being diluted and lost sight of in favour of profit…
Max, I thought MEC was about promoting an active lifestyle which yoga does….plus yoga can be practiced anywhere….even in the mountains. Some people even find yoga apparel good for all outdoor pursuits.
I think Max is taking the name too literally.
As already noted, the “coop” is about providing a service to its members who are clearly embraced by an active lifestyle.
Members are not just mountain climbers, they participate in a wide variety of activities. As such, they will typically add in the element of cross-training to prepare for their quests in whichever sport(s) they are active in. Yoga, specifically nowadays, is an integral part of most people’s “cross-training” – along with gyms, off-season sports, etc.
Max, it makes sense that if their research shows that most members are active in yoga, then why not help give them access to that “equipment”?
Great Video …just loved it..MEC Rocks, no matter wether its climbing, hiking or Yoga the most important thing is the “coop” ethics which makes it different from others.
I strongly believe that in every athlete lies the heart of a warrior. No matter what sport they play or what discipline they practice; every athlete at the most basic level is essentially a fighter. They stand alone, their success motivated 100% from within themselves.
MEC understand that the drive to compete is fueled by training and discipline, which is why they create a line of apparel and equipment which coveres a Mixed range of sports.
