One of the benefits of being an MEC member is the ability to buy high quality outdoor gear for a fair price.
However, as we all know, occasionally even great gear can fail.
And when gear does fail in sufficient numbers or with sufficient consequence, MEC recalls that product and does all it can to reach those who purchased the affected item(s).

Sample recall letter sent to affected members
While we have always targeted members with letters and/or emails in these circumstances, and will continue to do so, we will also post notices and updates here to increase the likelihood that every member with an affected product is aware of the issue.
And issues can vary. In addition to safety recalls that we’ve carried out in the past, we’ve also had to contact members about other things such as a sleeping bag where there was an issue with the insulation, updated washing instructions for a high-tech jacket, and updated instructions for a complex product. In the case of the sleeping bag we offered a partial refund to those who wanted to keep the bag, or a full refund for those who wished to return it.
Please check here periodically in case a new product recall has popped up, and please keep your contact information up to date to ensure we can reach you directly if we need to.
Current Notices
Portec hammock tree straps
We’ve become aware of a few instances where the sewn-on loops on these straps have failed in normal use, allowing the attached hammock (and occupant) to fall to the ground. We’re asking that you stop using the straps immediately, and return them by August 21st , 2011 to one of our stores for a full refund.
If it is not convenient for you to return your straps to a store, contact the Service Centre at 1.800.663.2667 – please ask for the Returns Department.
Petzl GRIGRI 2 belay devices
Petzl has alerted us that GRIGRI 2s with serial numbers starting with from 10326 to 11136 inclusive are being recalled as described on their website at
http://www.petzl.com/en/outdoor/recall-replacement-grigri-2
If you have an affected unit, please immediately stop using it. Petzl is offering to replace it for you with an improved version that will not be available at retailers until current owners are taken care of. They are covering shipping costs associated with the replacement. To obtain a replacement, please contact Petzl as outlined at the link above.
If you have an up to date email address on file with MEC, you should already have received an email update from us about this.
Petzl is being abundantly cautious here; the problem may occur when excessive force is exerted on the fully extended handle. They are aware of seven units that this has happened to and do not know of any accidents resulting from a damaged GRIGRI 2 handle.
Bell Exodus Helmets
The manufacturer has alerted us that the retention buckle on the chin strap of these helmets may separate under some conditions. All these helmets are being recalled.

If it’s more convenient for you, call Returns at 1-800-663-2667 to arrange to send it back to our Service Centre rather than bring it back to one of our brick and mortar stores.
